Luke 2:36-38 (NKJV) Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess… of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

Merry Christmas! As we wait for packages to walk through the door or to be pulled out from under the tree, give me just four or five minutes to encourage you for a moment. I sincerely believe God has something that He wants to say to someone this morning...

“Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess… of the tribe of Asher.” At a glance, it doesn’t mean much. But suppose you investigate the timeline of the person and tribe of Asher in Biblical context. In that case, it will reveal hidden profundities.

Asher was a son of Jacob. As a result, he became the leader of one of Israel’s founding tribes; there were 12 in total. His name means happy and blessed. It was prophesied over his lineage as they left Egyptian bondage that his section of the Promised Land would be blessed economically, and his people’s feet would be drenched in olive oil. Upon re-entry into the Promised Land, it happened. Asher’s descendants were given a fertile and lush land with access to the sea. Like their forefather, their heritage was synonymous with blessing and happiness, many times resulting directly from wise and integral movements politically and culturally.

When the tribes ceased submission to the rule of judges and chose a king, the tribe of Asher followed suit until there was a division between Saul and David. Initially, Asher’s tribe made a mistake and went with Saul’s followers and formed a northern kingdom. But, when Saul died, there is historical evidence that Asher’s people helped negotiate the House of Saul’s allegiance to David. However, when David’s grandson, Rehoboam, took the throne, the kingdom split again. This political and cultural divide was never again fully unified in Biblical records for any length of time. Meaning, for thousands of years to come, Asher’s lineage remained geographically and politically disjointed from the Southern Kingdom. This situation left them unaligned or unified fully with Jerusalem, the House of David’s capital city -- the place of God’s temple.

Enter Anna. Luke tells us that she is from Asher’s tribe. But, he also helps us see that she is aware of God’s promise to move on Earth spectacularly through the arrival of a Messiah. However, the Messiah (and promise) will appear outside of her comfort zone because God dropped the geographical pin in the Southern Kingdom and House of David’s Jerusalem -- at the temple.

When Anna lost her husband, she chose to fulfill the void in her life with the pursuit of the manifestation of this promise. Almost undoubtedly, she had to leave house, land, and family. But, Anna knew her tribe’s promise was “happiness” and “blessing,” and she didn’t sense the promise manifesting in a darkened and depressing house. So, she sold out and relocated! Anna moved south -- to the temple. And, day and night, she lived there -- for EIGHTY-FOUR years -- telling every passerby of the truth that one day a move of God was going to enter the temple.

This widow moved her entire life to align with the fulfillment of God’s promise in the Earth. Think about it, with courage and fortitude, Anna moved to where she believed God was going to move next. Despite loss, pain, and grief, she would settle for nothing less than alignment with the promises of God.

Then it happened. After over eighty years of waiting... one morning, Joseph and Mary walked into the temple packing her promise. And, the Bible says, in an “instant” Anna knew, this ‘package’ was what she had been waiting for!

Eighty. Years. Then… in an INSTANT!

Don’t give you upon God! Keep believing. Keep testifying to anyone who will listen about the coming move of God. Despite family issues, loss, or past failures, move your life to align with what is promised in Scripture and made available through a relationship WITH Jesus. And, one day, don’t be surprised when somebody packs your promise through the door! In that moment, dance, shout, celebrate, and let the whole world know, “My God, did what he said he would do!”

When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she would conceive Jesus, she asked, “How can this be?”. The angel’s response started simply, “The Holy Spirit...” Have you ever had a “how” moment with God? If so, God's answer remains the same today as it was with Mary, "The Holy Spirit..."

In week 3 of our series, God With Us, we learned that The Father is God for us, Jesus is God with us, and the Holy Spirit is God in us.

Learn why this truth is so important as we dive into this message with Pastor Eric as he reveals four things that we receive when we invite the Holy Spirit into our lives.

“And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.’” Luke 1:35 (NKJV)

Abraham was a righteous man and the father of our Faith (Ref. Romans 4:16 NKJV). He is Biblically acknowledged for his close relationship with God which went to the next level during one memorable journey home from a battle. Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God… met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him (Hebrews 7:1-3 NKJV).

A broader biographical sketch of the moment is recorded in Genesis, “Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” (chapter 14:18-20 NKJV)

Notice some specifics about this encounter and the blessing that transpired. It takes place as the High Priest, Melchizedek, has bread and wine in his hands. The items Melchizedek is holding point to Jesus as the coming High Priest. And, Paul tells us as much, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us… that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:13-14 NKJV).

We are entitled to the blessing of Abraham because we have Jesus with us! And, when we partake of the Lord’s Supper (bread representative of His body and wine representative of his blood), it is within the order of God for us to declare the blessing of Abraham over our life.

The Blessing of Abraham is three-fold:

  • You are a child of the Most High God. Believe God for elevation! He is above everything, and he can enhance your influence for a more significant impact to accomplish His purposes on the Earth.

  • You can possess heaven and earth. God owns it all -- everything! Believe God to bless you with possessions so that you can bless others by providing for their needs.

  • You can have enemies delivered into your hands. Dominion over the attack of the enemy is possible!

In summary:

  1. Elevation

  2. Possession

  3. Dominion

Notice, the blessing is progressive. It is three levels -- so, believe God to bless you in all three dimensions!

I encourage you, with reverence in your heart, to gather some unleavened bread and wine (or improvise with crackers and juice), and partake of Communion while speaking this blessing over your life. Then, don’t hesitate to mimic Abraham’s response further, “And (Melchizedek) blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all (Genesis 14:19-20 NKJV).

Lay your tithes check (1/10 of your income; Hebrews 7:2 NKJV) in front of you. While you partake of Communion, speak the Abrahamic blessing over your life, giving God your treasure symbolically. We make this movement in worship, communicating to God that he has our heart -- and, thereby we are ready for any oncoming blessing! (For symbolism's sake, if you give through online portals, maybe you could lay your phone in front of you.) This is the point, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21 NKJV).

You’ve never given tithes before? Abraham had to start at some point as well! And, what better time to start than during the season when we celebrate Jesus’ birthday? The Christmas season’s first gift exchange transpired when “wise men” brought gifts to Jesus two thousand years ago.

In this vein, amazingly, the Bible teaches us that Jesus receives tithes personally (in a spiritual sense) when we give them to our storehouse (the local church), “Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he (Jesus) receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives” (Hebrews 7:4, 8 NKJV). “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:8-10 NKJV)

It’s such an incredible thing to consider, and it is so encouraging to know that our Savior -- God with us -- is still personally involved in receiving our gifts and seeing to it that blessing makes its way to those who are willing to believe for it.

The bottom-line: Because Jesus saved us, He is with us, and as we remember Him through Communion, we have the opportunity to believe for blessing and respond in generous worship.

Declare it: Elevation. Possession. Dominion. In Jesus' name, Amen.
